Gochangeupseong Fortress, or the Town Fortress of Gochang, was constructed as a natural stone fortress in the first year of Joseon King Danjong(1453) with Jeollado residents’ wisdom of ‘Better safe than sorry’ in order to prevent Japanese raiders’ invasion. This fortress, called Moyangseong Fortress, was linked with Ipamsanseong Fortress in Najujingwan to play ths role of an advanced base in defending Honam inland, so that it is conserved as the cultural heritage related to national defense for saving the nation in a great crisis as it has been in progress of restoration since 1976 as it was.

The natural scenery of Buan-gun is extraordinary, and the county possesses many national treasures, including Byeonsan Peninsula National Park.
