Jeonbuk State announced on the 24th that it will implement island development projects worth a total of 5.1 billion won in 2026 to improve living conditions in island areas and vitalize the local economy.
This initiative is an action plan under 「the "4th Comprehensive Island Development Plan (2018–2027)."」 It is structured to link living infrastructure, tourism, and income generation, with a strong focus on enhancing tangible benefits for local residents.
The overall project is built on three main pillars: infrastructure expansion, island specialization, and living infrastructure construction. Approximately 1.6 billion won will be allocated to the infrastructure sector, which includes a total of 9 projects, such as creating a walking trail between Myeongdo and Bangchukdo islands in Gunsan (400 million won), developing the Daegaksan trekking course on Sinsido Island (400 million won), constructing a lighterage wharf in Seonyu 3-gu (130 million won), widening and paving the connection road between Gipeungeum and Chido in Buan, renovating tourism infrastructure and village alleys on Seonyudo Island. Through these efforts, the province plans to simultaneously improve tourism accessibility and living convenience, while raising the completeness of infrastructure in island areas.
Meanwhile, 「the 4th Comprehensive Island Development Plan」 is currently underway with a total of 57 projects worth about 100 billion won. With 91.5 billion won invested up to 2025, most of the foundational infrastructure has been completed. The province views 2026 as the final wrapping-up stage and plans to materialize tangible results centered on high-impact projects.
Choi Jeong-il, Director General of the Construction and Transportation Bureau of Jeonbuk State, stated:
"Islands are Jeonbuk’s precious marine territory and vital assets that will drive our future growth. We will do our best to enhance tourism competitiveness through comprehensive island development, while ensuring island residents experience practical changes in their lives through tailored welfare projects, such as establishing LPG facilities."
