Jeonbuk State actively engaged in activities for winning a bid for the Jeonbuk Jeonju Summer Olympic Games. Governor of Jeonbuk, Kim, Gwanyeong visited the International Olympic Committee(IOC) Headquarters located in Lausanne, Switzerland on April, 8, local time, and had a formal meeting with Thomas Bach, the President of the International Olympic Committee and Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic, Chair of the Future Host Committee.

Governor Kim explained in person the vision and the strategy for hosting the Summer Olympic Games centered on Jeonbuk and Jeonju at this meeting, presenting Jeonbuk’s strength and differentiated idea to the President Bach. The President of the Korean Sports & Olympic Committee, Yu Seungmin, accompanied and strengthened communication with the International Sports World.

This meeting was arranged after Jeonbuk had been officially selected as the candidate city of Korea for the Summer Olympic Games in last February. Jeonbuk State presented a differentiated vision and the Olympic bid strategy based on the core values of Olympic Agenda 2020 including sustainability, social solidarity, heritage competition and others which IOC emphasizes.

Jeonbuk conveyed a message, “Together in Unity, Beyond Limits” with emphasis on ‘solidarity and inclusion’, the core value which the Regional Cities Olympics seeks, declaring its ambitions that it will realize “Greener, Greater together”.

Along with an introduction to Jeonbuk and Jeonju, a small town with a population of 1.80 million, Jeonbuk emphasized that it would make this Olympic Games the greatest in the world. Jeonbuk expressed that the Olympic is not a privilege of metropolitan areas any more if Jeonbuk successfully hosts the Olympic Games through a sophisticated strategy and the value of solidarity, and that a new paradigm for the Olympics in which more nations and cities in the world can participate will be able to be presented.

Then, Jeonbuk State proposed an idea that it will reduce the cost of hosting by utilizing existing infrastructure to the fullest extent and establish an efficient game operation system through the inter-regional cooperation in Jeonbuk. A sustainable event operation model, not to mention a regional balanced development through the decentralized hosting in connection with Saemangeum, the eastern region of Korea, interconnected cities and others, was also introduced.

Additionally, Jeonbuk proposed an idea of the Climate Neutral Olympics in which electricity required for the Stadium and the competition operation is supplemented with 100% renewable energy(RE100) by emphasizing that Jeonbuk is a region of Korea’s leading new and renewable energy producer. For 95% of the Stadium, existing facilities will be utilized and for the temporary Stadium, the environmental burden is planned to be minimized according to building with modular timber construction.

Cultural attractiveness is also an essential factor of the Olympic hosting strategy. Jeonbuk State emphasized that Jeonju is the hub of K-culture where the tradition and the modernity coexist, highlighting values as the Culture Olympics by connecting Hanok Village, Jeonju Bibimbap, Korean traditional arts and others with global concerns.

Jeonbuk State plans to establish the Olympic Larchivium Committee so that sports and culture can contribute to communities continuously after hosting the Olympic Games. This committee aims to preserve and utilize the Olympic legacy for a long time as an integrated management system of games, records, tourism, education and culture.
