International Fermented Food Expo, Jeonju

The International Fermented Food Expo in Jeonju, is the only world exposition held on the theme of fermentation, which generates the forum for a variety of communication and exchange between all sorts of global cultural heritage in fermentation containing ethnic unique life and culture.

The Firefly Festival in Muju is a classic environmental festival of Korea. This firefly themed festival was designated the 322nd natural monument of Korea, helping people appreciate the importance of the environment and culture against the background of pristine nature in Muju. It is also a festival for singles seeking love, as the gestures of the firefly are said to signify the search for love. Taking place on a Seop (temporary bridge) made from logs, mud, and pine branches, it hosts performances like a traditional wedding, traditional nongak (farmers music), and a funeral parade. CNN Go featured a piece on Muju, calling it one of Korea’s most beautiful events, and stated, “Behold the traditions of yore on the Seop bridge festival, part of the Muju firefly festival scheduled to be held from late August to early September every year.”

Sunchang Source Festival

Jang is the Korean word for paste, and includes Sunchang gochujang (red pepper paste) which is famous for its offerings to the kings during the Joseon era, and here offers this traditional delicacy along with beauty as the main themes. May different programs are offered, such as the Sunchang gochujang (red pepper paste) making event, gochujang bibimbab making, and Meju fermented soybean making. The most popular two programs are the Sunchang Gochujang Parade of offerings to the king and the Sunchang Gochujang National Cooking Competition. The festival was awarded the economic grand prize in the first Korean Festival Events Awards.

The Gimje Horizon Festival, which began in 1999, is the only festival themed on traditional farming culture among the representative culture and tourism festivals in Korea.
The festival is held around the Byeokgokje Special Stage with the horizon in Korea as the main theme in order to promote Horizon Rice, the specialty of Gimje, as well as widely acknowledge Gimje.

The festival is held at the end of Sep. or in early Oct. as the representative autumn festival in Korea.
The events of the festival include the Horizon Farmers’ Performance Contest, where representative performance groups in Korea participate as the only contest for the Presidential Cup among all festival contests in Korea, Byeokgolje Legend Double Dragon Game, as the representative performance event with residents from Buryang-myeon, Gimje on the basis of Danya Tale, the tale about the construction of Byeokgolje, the main stage of the festival, and Ipseok Tug of War, the traditional folk game praying for good harvest on the 15th of the first lunar month.

Moreover, there is a variety of participatory experience programs for visitors of every age and gender as well as families, including cooking classes and thatched-roof house making. Recently, diverse kinds of things to see are also presented, including an air show.

The Jinan Red Ginseng Festival is held every autumn and presents a variety of events related to red ginseng, as well as the Jinan Highlands Culture Experience Event around the northern part of Maisan Mountain in Jinan, the only special red ginseng district in Korea.
