Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. starts building shipyard in Gunsan from the 7th
The nation's largest ship building corporation, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., will invest five hundred billion won in building a shipyard in Gunsan, Junlabukdo.
On the 7th, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. will hold the ceremony of "laying down the keel" and start the construction of a shipyard in which twenty 18t ships can be built per year. The completion date is set at January 2012. The total investment reaches five hundred billion won and the total area of the building site is 1.8 million m2. Considering the fees of constructing annex facilities and machine equipment facilities, the total investment is prospected to reach more than one trillion won.
Last October, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. had invested four hundred billion won in building a ship block manufacturing factory on a 3600000 m2 wide construction site in Gunjang's industrial complex.

On the 7th, Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. will hold the "laying down the keel" ceremony to build a large-scale shipyard in Gunjang's industrial complex. The total investment will reach five hundred million won and twenty ships (18t) can be built per year in this shipyard. The company's president Chae Gilsun, Junlabukdo's governor Kim Wanju, the mayor of Gunsan City Moon Dongshin, and many others will attend the ceremony.
Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. plans to install one Goalath crane (1600t), a construction dock, and a door dock in the Gunsan site.
The corporation decided to invest in Gunsan as a response to meet the increasing demands for ships and the lack of construction sites due to expansion of business. The corporation predicts that they will have to employ at least 6000 to 6500 workers (not including the 5000 workers from co-working companies) for the normal functioning of the shipyard.
Labor costs of running the shipyard is predicted at three hundred billion won and local tax income is calculated at ten billion won, and will be a large boon to Gunsan's economy.
When the block manufacturing factory finishes construction in April of next year, it is forecasted that about 1500 workers will settle down nearby. It is assumed that if these workers come with their families to Gunsan, the population will increase by ten thousand more people. This will, in turn, lead to the creation of a larger market.
50 locations in Jeonbuk allures companies
In addition, large corporations such as Doosan Infracore and Dongyang Chemicals are builing facilities nearby the Hyundai shipyard, accelerating the modification process of Gunsan's originally agricultural and fisheries-based industrial structure.
Junlabukdo and Gunsan City holds the positive hope that the construction of the shipyard will lead to the inflow of people, which will in turn vitalize the entire economy.
