The birth of nation's sole silkworm town
Buan-gun, the sole special silkworm zone
On 8th this month, "Silkworm town", a silkworm exposition hall displaying everything about mulberry leaves and silkworms was constructed at Yuyu village, Mapo-ri, Byeonsan-myeon, Buan-gun and local politicians ann residents attended to celebrate the event.
Yuyu village set up sisterhood relationship with department of agricultural biology of Rural Development Administration and promised to offer a full cooperation for development of silkworm rearing industry.
The silkworm town was constructed in an area, almost same size with 11 soccer play stadiums, and it has two 2-story buildings(2,260㎡ in total), a water garden, amusement facilities, and a park.
The 1st building has a silkworms & insects science hall displaying silkworms, mulberry leaves, and other insects, an explore hall shaped in cave, a cafeteria shaped in mulberry tree, and an observatory.
The 2nd building has built a filed-learning hall to allow visitors actually experience silkworm rearing, insects specimen making, and silkworm-related products making and visitors could enjoy a wonderful moment to learn silkworm processed products and history of silkworm and silks.
Study on production & supply of silkworm seeds
Byeonsan and Haseo-myeon area(84ha), Buan-gun, well known as an uncontaminated district, was designated as "silkworm rearing special zone" for R&D and product developments on the silkworm rearing in 2006.
Jeonbuk Silkworm Industry Study Institute, attributed to studies about production & supply of silkworm seeds and silkworm rearing technology, is scheduled to move in this area until 2011 and the silkworm rearing special zone will become a biggest center for the nation's silkworm industry.
Local residents believe new contents, represented by silkworms and insects, would offer a wonderful moment to tourists visiting Saemangeum and Byeonsan beach as a new attract, hoping that Buan would be a comprehensive industrial zone playing as a complex mixing a variety of industries like agriculture, fishing, food processing, and tourism.
Buan-gun having the biggest mulberry field rearing silkworms has been working on 50 special projects, including productions of high quality mulberry leaves and fruits and other processed foods, "original mulberry" brand marketing, and silkworm town experiencing tour, which is eventually aimed at promoting the silkworm industry as a growth one.
