“Green light" for Gunsan airport to launch international airline service
SOFA took it as new agenda for discussions between Korea and USA
Launching international airline service to Gunsan airport wouldn't be so late, possibly by the end of the year.
Discussions between Korea and USA, aimed at revising "Agreement on joint use of Gunsan air force base" which has restricted international airline service, will begin within the month.
SOFA(Status of Forces Agreement) hasn't approved the launching of international airline service on Gunsan airport until today, which has caused most negative effects and obstacles on the goal of launching it, but recently Korea and USA officially adopted the matter for new agenda of SOFA.
Jeollabukdo said, "matters about a new launching of international airline service on Gunsan airport have been officially adopted as new agenda of SOFA and a joint working level council has been established at "subcommittee of facility & district" under the SOFA joint committee to discuss about the matter".
Korea & USA working level committee, consisted with Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, Ministry of National Defense, and representatives of American forces, is about to begin the conference to revise "Agreement on joint use of Gunsan air force base" which was adopted at 1992 from mid of the month.
The conference about revision of SOFA agenda was known to usually take about six(6) to twelve(12) months.
If the service is approved, the local government is going to use the existing airport by making up partly present facilities and further, to extend airport runway(; 4,000 m) gradually.
Easta Jet's launching international airline service to give great help to developments of Saemangeum
Although Gunsan airport has been expected to have a constant increase in demands thanks to developments of Saemangeum, while public opinions has been kept increasing for the international service launching, the agreement has prevented the service from produced. To solve the problem, the local government required the American government to approve a launching of unscheduled international flight service temporarily until a new airport runway is constructed, keeping asking U.S. ambassador, Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs, and Ministry of National Defense.
In Jeonbuk, Easta Jet which was established in Gunsan has produced the daily flight service between Gunsan and Jeju along with Korean airline.Easta Jet has a plan to establish an international airport by constructing one runway in Saemangeum area outside of Gunsan airport on a long term basis, taking Saemangeum developments into consideration.
