With the promulgation of the 'Special Act on the Management of Metropolitan Area Traffic' (hereafter Act on Metropolitan Area) amendment, the Jeonbuk metropolitan transport system is on a path of fundamental change.

 

The revision is centred on Jeonju-si and includes Iksan-si, Kimje-si, and Wanju-gun as a ‘metropolitan area’of ‘Jeonju area’. This has secured the legal and institutional status of the Jeonbuk State as the main actor in regional transport policy, and laid the foundation for the province to receive state funding for major regional transport infrastructure projects, including regional roads, regional railways, bus rapid transit (BRT), transit centres, and public depots.

 

In particular, the revision is regarded as a major turning point in that it has granted authority and financial support to provincial metropolitan areas beyond the limits of the existing transport policy, which was centred on the capital and metropolitan areas.

 

In this regard, Jeonbuk State expects the revision of the Act on Metropolitan Area to provide practical transportation convenience, such as reducing commuting time, alleviating traffic congestion, and improving access to public transportation, while also having a positive ripple effect on the local economy by attracting industry, improving the settlement environment, and revitalising tourism.
