Jeonbuk, the history of challenge towards the Olympics. The journey to attracting the 2036 Summer Olympic Games

Jeonbuk was finally confirmed as a domestic candidate region for hosting the 2036 Summer Olympic Games. It won a great victory by 49 votes for Jeonbuk, 11 for Seoul and 1 spoiled vote while a total of 61 delegates voted at the Annual General Meeting of Korean Sports & Olympic Committee(KSOC)’s Delegate Assembly held on the 28th. This is a historical moment that provided the basis for enhancing Jeonbuk’s international standing and the balanced national development. Years of preparation, a systemic strategy and the active participation of Jeonbuk residents bore fruit. Therefore, Jeonbuk seized the opportunity of leaping toward a global hub for sports.
Jeonbuk’s challenge to host the Olympic Games was not achieved in a short time. As a service of ‘the Feasibility Study on attracting the 2036 Olympic Games’ has been started since last June, 2023, the first real step was taken. After this, a thorough preparation has been continued when the analysis of gymnastics facilities and necessary funds for attracting an international competition(May, 2024) and the one of the brief investigation on the suitability of the Olympic facilities(July, 2024) were done.
In September, 2024 when Korean Sports & Olympic Commitee(KSOC) announced a notice of selecting ‘a domestic candidate region for hosting the 2036 Summer Olympic Games’, Jeonbuk immediately responded. It enhanced the competitiveness for attracting such as organizing the Olympic Bid Task Force, creating the Event plan and others. On the 12th of November in the same year, the Event plan was submitted to Korean Sports & Olympic Commitee(KSOC) followed by going through the process as an official domestic candidate city.
Jeonbuk which has put forth a non-capital region alliance strategy also created a turning point for national balanced development including filing the consent to use regarding to major facilities(November, 2024) through a discussion with areas of engagement such as Gwangju, Jeonnam, Chungnam, Chungbuk, Dagu and others. In the presentation screening of the Annual General Meeting of Korean Sports & Olympic Commitee(KSOC)’s Delegate Assembly held on 28th of November, the Governor of Jeonnam, Kim, Yeongrok, the Governor of Chungnam, Kim, Taeheum, the Mayor of Gwangju, Gang, Gijeong and the Mayor of Daegu, Hong, junpyo declared their support for attracting the Olympic Games to Jeonbuk on video, additionally demonstrating the power of solidarity.
The promotional campaign to spread residents’ participation and consensus was also actively developed. Various age groups participated in cheering for the Olympic bid through the GBCH challenge(Go Beyond, Create Harmony)’. In addition, the atmosphere of the Olympic bid was boosted by appointing a public relations ambassador, social media promotion, drawing awards, the National Chorus of Korea concert, Taekwondo cultural performance and others. In the challenge progressed for a month since January, as participation was sustained across all sectors of society including expatriates, more than 500 persons participated.
Winning the bid for the 2036 Summer Olympic Games is expected to play an important role in the economic and social development in Jeonbuk region. The effect of revitalizing the local economy is viewed to be large due to road and rail network expansion, construction of new sports facilities and a renovation of the sports facility, tourism infrastructure improvement and others. Additionally, Jeonbuk’s international recognition is anticipated to be further increased according to greeting squads and tourists who visit from various countries.
Beforehand, Jeonbuk Institute analysed an economic effect in conformity with hosting the 2036 Summer Olympic Games by use of the Input-Output table issued by the Bank of Korea. As a result, it was calculated that the effect of production inducement would add up to KRW 40,400,000 million nationwide, KRW 27,900,000 million in Jeonbuk, value-added induced effect, KRW 17,800,000 million nationwide, KRW 12,900,000 million for Jeonbuk, and job creation effect, 449,000 persons nationwide, 374,000 persons in Jeonbuk.
The Governor of Jeonbuk, Kim, Gwanyeong, said, “The selection of the domestic candidate city for the Olympic Games this time is an achievement accomplished with residents together.” and “I will go back to basics and enter the international competition after pulling together with residents and partner cities.”. In addition, he emphasized that he would try to his best to make sure that Jeonbuk will be selected as the 2036 Summer Olympic host city.
Jeonbuk is planning to submit the International Event Hosting Plan to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and get the approval from it and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance followed by engaging in full-scale bidding for the Olympic Games in cooperation with the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee(KSOC).
After a bid for hosting the Summer Olympic Games is submitted to the International Olympic Committee(IOC), the candidate city will be evaluated by IOC Future Host Commissions. After that, Preferred bidder cities will be recommended through IOC Future Host Commissions’ Judgement. Finally, the host city is decided through voting at the IOC General Assembly.
Presently, international cities which want to attract the Summer Olympic Games are also making their competition be in full swing. More than 10 countries including India, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Catarrh, Turkey, Egypt and others jumped into the bidding war. India is considering holding throughout the country out of the metropolitan area. Indonesia is aiming to holding the Olympic Games in Southeast Asia for the first time. Saudi Arabia, the host country of the 2030 Expo and Catarrh, which successfully hosted the 2022 World Cup are also viewed as formidable competitors.
